Best Antivirus with VPN: The Bundled VPN in 25 Security Suites, Ranked
If you want one subscription for both the scanner and the tunnel, Malwarebytes Privacy VPN has the highest page score here (3.97), McAfee is the cheapest entry at €2.15 a month for the first year, and Norton packs the most features. None of the 25 suite VPNs on the ranking is a privacy heavyweight, and that matters more than the antivirus brand on the box. Read more

What the VPN inside a suite is, and what the score measures
An antivirus checks files, downloads and links on your device; the VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its server. Neither replaces the other. The ranking rates only the VPN part, built from what providers publish: audits, logging policies, apps, prices. Malware detection plays no role in the score; for that, independent labs such as AV-TEST publish their own results. The score weighs privacy 30%, security 20%, censorship bypass 15%, price and terms 15%, network 10%, apps and platforms 10%.
Who actually runs the VPN in your suite
Six of the 25 services belong to Gen Digital (Norton, Avast SecureLine, Avast Free VPN, AVG Secure VPN, Avira and Avira Phantom VPN). Others license technology: Bitdefender, TotalVPN and both F-Secure entries use the Hydra protocol from Pango, Intego runs Lightway inside the Kape group, Clario's VPN is powered by NordVPN, and Dashlane's runs on Hotspot Shield. Check who operates the servers before paying for the suite version.
The top three by page score
| Service | Page score | From | Refund | Devices | Independent no-logs audit | Protocols |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malwarebytes Privacy VPN | 3.97 | €3.33/mo (1 year) | 60 days | 3 | yes (2026, auditor not named) | WireGuard only |
| McAfee VPN | 3.19 | €2.15/mo (first year) | 30 days on annual plans | 1, 5 or unlimited by plan | claimed, linked via TunnelBear blog | WireGuard (Windows), OpenVPN, IKEv2 |
| Norton VPN | 3.01 | €2.29/mo (2-year plan) | 60 days annual, 14 days monthly | 5, or 10 on Ultimate | none | WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Mimic |
Malwarebytes earns its lead on privacy infrastructure: RAM-only servers on a network owned through its sister brand AzireVPN, a no-logs policy, a warrant canary and a transparency report. Norton keeps the connection day and location for 12 months and publishes no audit, and Malwarebytes' antivirus comes only in the Malwarebytes Plus bundle (€6.67 a month). The shared weak spot is the network: Norton publishes no country or server count, giving it a network sub-score of 0, McAfee manages 0.9, and Malwarebytes, with 60+ locations and 150+ servers, reaches 2.6.
Where suite VPNs fall short
Only 2 of 25 publish an independent no-logs audit, so most logging promises rest on the vendor's word. Twelve of the 25 are registered in the USA and 11 sit inside Five Eyes countries, which costs privacy points. Linux users get nothing: zero of 25 ship a Linux app. Obfuscation exists in just four services (Norton and AVG through Mimic, Avast SecureLine and ESET with Stealth/Stunnel), so Malwarebytes and McAfee offer no way to disguise their traffic. And while 15 services confirm a kill switch, at McAfee it is off by default, so it protects nothing until you switch it on.
Free and trial VPNs inside suites: the data caps
Five of 25 have a free plan, and every one meters it.
| Service | Free allowance | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender VPN | 500 MB a day | fine for logins, not video |
| Panda VPN | 150 MB a day | emergency use only |
| Avira VPN | 500 MB a month | a few sessions a month |
| Avira Phantom VPN | 500 MB a month, 1 GB with registration | a few sessions a month |
| Malwarebytes Privacy VPN | monthly cap | the amount is not published |
McAfee's 30-day trial requires a card and caps the VPN at 500 MB a month. Its 30-day money-back applies to annual plans only, not monthly ones.
First-year price versus renewal, and the password manager question
The advertised price is almost always introductory. McAfee Basic costs $29.99 for the first year and renews at $89.99, roughly triple; Norton Standard renews at $79.99 after a $39.99 first year, about double. Bitdefender renews at $69.99 a year, and Trend Micro also uses an introductory first-term price. Since 18 of 25 services auto-renew by default, set a reminder ahead of the anniversary; refunds range from 14 days (Clario, which keeps a $19.99 activation fee) to 70 days (Webroot WiFi Security). A password manager is included in some plan at 10 of 25 services, for example Norton Plus, Aura, Avira Prime, F-Secure Total and Dashlane; VPN-first services with one are compared at VPNRadarLab.
When a separate VPN is the better buy
Buy standalone if you need a Linux client (no suite offers one), a published audit, obfuscation or many locations. The reverse route also exists: VPN providers that add malware blocking to their own apps, ranked at VPNRadarLab.
FAQ
Do I need an antivirus if I already use a VPN?
Yes. A VPN encrypts traffic; it does not inspect files, downloads or phishing links on your device.
Is the free VPN in a suite enough for daily use?
No. Caps of 150–500 MB a day or 500 MB a month cover short browsing sessions, not streaming or video calls.
Does any suite VPN work on Linux?
Not among the 25 ranked. Twenty-two providers explicitly say no, three don't state it.
Short answer
Malwarebytes Privacy VPN: highest page score, best privacy credentials, €3.33 a month for 3 devices. McAfee VPN: cheapest first year on one device, renews at about 3x. Norton VPN: most features, but it keeps the connection day and location for 12 months. Every free plan on the page is capped, and Malwarebytes does not publish the amount. If you need Linux, obfuscation or an audited service outside Five Eyes, skip the bundle and buy a dedicated VPN.
