Why people look for a replacement

Norton VPN scores 3.01 out of 10 and ranks 112th in our main rating. It does offer apps for TVs, split tunneling, a 24/7 chat and a 60-day money-back period. It loses points elsewhere: a US jurisdiction inside the 5 Eyes alliance, no word from the service on an independent audit of its no-logs policy, and no published number of countries or servers. Add the renewal price: Standard costs $39.99 in the first year and $79.99 in the second.

Same owner: HMA and Avast

HMA VPN (3.29) also belongs to Gen Digital, but its data operator is registered in the Czech Republic. HMA has a Versprite audit of its no-logs policy, 65+ countries, 3,400+ servers and a 7-day trial period. Its lowest price, $2.99 per month, only applies when you pay for three years upfront, and HMA does not publish its renewal price. It has no WireGuard, and the service says nothing about obfuscation. Avast SecureLine VPN (2.88), AVG Secure VPN (2.81) and Avast Free VPN (2.72) belong to the same family and score lower than Norton, so switching between them changes little.

A different owner: McAfee and the rest

McAfee VPN (3.19) is also from the US and is also sold bundled with antivirus software. It cites an independent audit, but the Basic plan at $29.99 covers one device and renews at $89.99, three times the price of the first year. McAfee's FAQ names 21 countries with servers. Webroot WiFi Security (2.31) and TotalVPN (1.79) close the list, and TotalVPN is the most expensive of them: from €7.10 per month.

When to stay with Norton

If you need to bypass blocking, Norton offers its own protocol, Mimic, with traffic obfuscation for Windows, Mac and Android. For most services in this list, obfuscation is not stated. All antivirus products with a built-in VPN are gathered in our rating of VPNs bundled with antivirus software, where Norton ranks third out of 25.
