From Symantec to Gen Digital
The Norton brand belonged to Symantec for a long time. In 2019, Broadcom bought Symantec's enterprise business, and the remaining consumer part was renamed NortonLifeLock on November 4, 2019. In September 2022, NortonLifeLock completed its merger with Avast, and on November 7 of the same year the combined company took the name Gen Digital. Its shares trade on NASDAQ under the ticker GEN.
Related brands
Under the same roof as Norton today are Norton 360, LifeLock, Avast, AVG, Avira and CCleaner, and the Gen website also lists the financial service MoneyLion among its brands. The group runs several VPNs, and in our ranking Norton VPN comes second among them: only HMA VPN scores higher. All VPNs from the group with their ratings are collected on the Gen Digital VPN brands page.
Jurisdiction and EU data
The company is registered in the US, and the US is part of the 5 Eyes alliance, so under the alliance criterion Norton gets no points in our privacy rating. For users from the European Economic Area, the data controller under the GDPR is the Irish NortonLifeLock Ireland Ltd, and questions about personal data go to the data protection officer, Pembroke Privacy Ltd, at DPO@gendigital.com. Services with the same jurisdiction are collected in our list of US-based VPNs.
Is Norton VPN connected to Broadcom?
No. Broadcom bought only Symantec's enterprise business, while the consumer Norton stayed with the company now known as Gen Digital.
