McAfee VPN alternatives: what changes if you switch

McAfee VPN scores 3.19 out of 10, and all six services in the same segment rank below it. In our ranking of VPNs in antivirus packages it comes second out of 25. So switching within antivirus bundles almost always means trading one set of weaknesses for another. McAfee has three: zero points for bypassing blocks, a thin network (the FAQ names 21 countries, the server count is not published) and a renewal priced three times higher than the first year. The basic plan at $29.99 also covers a single device.

Norton VPN: the closest in score

Norton VPN scores 3.01 and costs from €2.29 per month. For that money you get five devices instead of one, a 60-day money-back guarantee instead of 30, the in-house Mimic protocol with obfuscation, double VPN and apps for Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. Renewal costs roughly twice as much as the first year. Norton falls behind on privacy: 2.3 versus 4.3, because its no-logs policy has not been independently audited, and the policy allows storing the connection date and location for 12 months. The other five: pricier or weaker

Webroot WiFi Security (2.31) will cost you from €2.58 per month. ESET VPN and Aura VPN come in at €6.45 and €10.32, three to five times the price of McAfee, with lower scores. G DATA VPN is the only service on the list registered in Germany, yet that puts it in the 14 Eyes alliance, and its score is 1.5. Trend Micro VPN Proxy One costs the same as McAfee, €2.15 per month, and closes out the list with 1.11.

Is there a cheaper alternative to McAfee VPN?

Not on this list: Trend Micro charges the same €2.15 per month, and Norton costs 14 cents more. But Norton gives you five devices for that money, while McAfee gives you one.
