First year and all the years after

McAfee sells its VPN only as part of the McAfee+ and Total Protection packages, and the price shown on the site is aimed at new customers. Basic at $29.99 for the first year comes out to about €2.15 per month, cheaper than the market median of €3.13. The crossed-out figure next to it, $89.99, is the renewal price, so from the second year onward the same plan costs about €6.45 per month, twice the median. The "SAVE $60" label is also calculated against the renewal price. Over three years, Basic costs about €180, and about €155 of that comes from the two renewals.

Which plan to choose

The plan determines the number of devices and the identity protection features. Basic covers one device, Essential at $39.99 gives you five, and Advanced at $89.99 removes the limit and adds credit monitoring. If you need the VPN on a phone and a laptop, Basic will not be enough, while Essential costs just $10 more in the first year and $30 more at renewal. Advanced makes sense if you want identity protection or have a large family with a dozen devices.

When you get charged

McAfee renews subscriptions by charging your card 30 days before the term ends, so you need to cancel at least 31 days in advance, in the My Account section. Anyone who remembers the subscription in the final week will already have paid the full price.
