Trustpilot rates the company as a whole

Out of 200 reviews collected on Trustpilot, 192 are negative, with an average of 1.20 out of 5. The VPN itself is barely mentioned there: it appears in only two negative reviews. By our rough keyword-based estimate, half of the complaints are about money: auto-renewals, subscription cancellations and refunds. Another third are unhappy with support, and the company has not replied to a single one of the 192 negative reviews.

The App Store is closer to the VPN

We collected 1,000 App Store reviews of the McAfee app, with an average of 2.98, and happy users there are almost as numerous as unhappy ones: 451 versus 478. Half of the positive reviews mention protection and security. In the negative reviews, money and support again come first, followed by account login and connection problems, and the VPN is named outright in every sixth negative review. The store itself shows 4.72 from 239 thousand ratings, but those are stars without text, while our sample includes only reviews with text.

An iPhone failure in September

In September 2026, 10 out of 38 App Store reviews described the same breakdown: after an iOS or app update, the enabled VPN cut off all internet on the iPhone and iPad, and sites and apps would load only after the VPN was switched off. Are recent App Store reviews better than older ones?

Slightly: since June 2026 the average there is 3.29, versus 2.92 in earlier reviews. The overall monthly average since summer is lower, because low Trustpilot ratings were included in the count from the end of May.
