We collected 1,493 reviews from Trustpilot, App Store and Google Play. The figures vary a lot between sources, and each gap has its own reason.
Why Trustpilot looks the best
The Trustpilot profile covers all of AVG, not just the VPN: people write there about the antivirus, the cleaner and the company's subscriptions. That gives 4.31 out of 5 after smoothing, while the average across all VPNs on Trustpilot is 3.66. This figure says little about the VPN itself. Out of 20 negative reviews there, the company has not replied once.
What people write in the app stores
App Store looks the worst: 3.14 after smoothing, with 202 of the 493 collected reviews giving 1 or 2 stars. The store itself shows 4.66 in the US based on 13,267 ratings, but that includes all ratings over the years, many without text. Google Play shows 3.94, level with the VPN average, and here AVG replied to 159 of 167 negative reviews, usually asking the user to contact support.
The main complaint in negative reviews for both stores is the same: the connection. Roughly a third of those reviews say the VPN disconnects on its own, drops out or fails to connect at all; some write that only a reinstall helps, and that after updates individual cities stop working. The second most common theme, about one eighth, is that the sites they need, banks or BBC iPlayer, do not open through the VPN.
