Avira Phantom VPN scores 1.70 out of 10 and ranks 287th out of 377 in our main ranking. It offers a kill switch on Windows in the Pro plan, DNS leak protection, torrents and a 60-day money-back period on the annual plan, but one thing outweighs all of it: under its privacy policy, the service stores the IP address of your connection and session times. That earns it a red flag and 0 out of 10 for privacy. For details, see our review of whether Avira Phantom VPN is safe.

Same owner, higher score

The first six spots in the list go to Gen Digital brands, the company that also owns Avira. Switching to any of them keeps you under the same owner. HMA VPN, with a score of 3.29, leads the list and is the only one that has passed an independent no-logs audit, with prices from €2.57 per month. Norton VPN (3.01) is the cheapest on the list, from €2.29. Avast SecureLine VPN and AVG Secure VPN sit nearly level at 2.88 and 2.81, but cost more, from €3.43 and €3.78. Despite its name, Avast Free VPN is also paid, from €3.43.

Similar in features

Among services from other companies, Webroot WiFi Security scores highest, at 2.31 with a price from €2.58. The rest are weaker than Phantom or only slightly better. Both F-Secure versions also store the connection IP, so you would be swapping one problem for the same one. G DATA VPN is registered in Germany, just like Phantom, but scored 1.50 and costs from €5. The only free plan shown in the list belongs to Avira itself, which scores 1.84 and carries a red flag for a public security incident. Phantom itself offers 500 MB per month for free, or 1 GB after registration.
