49 Reddit and forum threads mention Avira Phantom VPN (we keep titles and search snippets only).

Out of 2314 collected reviews, 1568 came from Google Play, where the smoothed rating is 3.87 out of 5. The App Store picture is worse: 2.71 from 546 reviews, and 250 of those have one star. Trustpilot gives 4.50, but that profile belongs to all of Avira: of 200 reviews, only three mention the VPN, the rest are about the antivirus and support.

The main complaint: the VPN does not connect

By a rough keyword count in English, German, Italian and Arabic, 44% of negative reviews in the App Store and 25% in Google Play describe the same thing. The app shows a loading screen endlessly, the on button does nothing, and there is no connection over Wi-Fi at all. Roughly one in eight negative reviews in the App Store links the breakdown to an iOS update.

Paid, but no subscription

The second theme is about money. A quarter of negative App Store reviews say that after paying, the app keeps asking for a subscription, does not find the purchase when restoring, or leaves the free 500 MB limit in place. Avira Prime users write that on their phone they get the trial version instead of the paid one. On Trustpilot, out of ten negative reviews, several describe renewal and cancellation without access to the account.
