What drags Bitdefender down

Bitdefender VPN has a solid base: 10 devices, apps for computers, phones and TVs, a 24/7 support chat, and a free version capped at 500 MB per day. The main downside is privacy. According to its privacy policy, the service collects IP addresses to establish a connection, and the VPN network is run by IPVanish. That earns Bitdefender a red flag. The second downside is the price: the first year costs $34.99, and renewal jumps to $69.99 per year.

If you are leaving over privacy

All six services in the list are sold as part of antivirus packages, but they handle IP addresses differently. McAfee VPN and Norton VPN do not collect the connection IP address under their policies, and both are rated higher than Bitdefender. McAfee also has a link to an independent no-logs audit. The catch is jurisdiction: both companies are American, and the US belongs to the Five Eyes alliance, whereas Romania, where Bitdefender is registered, is outside these alliances. The two F-Secure cards at the bottom of the list do not solve this problem: according to its policy, F-Secure also stores the connection IP.

If you are leaving over price

A cheap first year followed by a sharp renewal is common to almost all of them. McAfee renews with a noticeable price jump and charges you 30 days before the term ends, so you need to cancel in advance. Avast Free VPN, which has the same owner as Norton, costs $59.88 in the first year and renews at $99.99. Webroot WiFi Security offers the longest refund window, 70 days, but does not publish its renewal terms.

What you will lose

Not one of the alternatives has a free version. Instead, they offer trial periods: 30 days at McAfee and F-Secure, 60 days at Avast. Norton has the Mimic protocol for traffic obfuscation (stealth), a feature Bitdefender lacks.
