Where the reviews come from and why the ratings differ

We collected 898 reviews: 400 from Google Play, 298 from the App Store and 200 from Trustpilot. The Trustpilot profile covers all of bitdefender.com, so most posts there are about the antivirus and subscriptions, and only three negative reviews mention the VPN. The stores themselves show 4.7 on Google Play and 4.81 on the US App Store, while our smoothing gives 3.92 and 3.24. A store counts every star rating, while our sample includes only text reviews, and unhappy users write those more often. There are almost no fresh text reviews in the App Store: four in the last 90 days.

The main complaint: the connection drops

About half of the one- and two-star reviews in both stores are about connectivity. The VPN disconnects on its own and does not reconnect until you restart the app. Several people write that the kill switch did not trigger and traffic leaked outside the tunnel. Others complain that with the VPN on, websites and apps fail to load on Android, and after an update the app started requiring a Google Play login. If you need constant protection on your phone, test this in the first few days: paid plans come with a 30-day refund window.

Money and support

On Trustpilot, half of the negative reviews are about auto-renewal, cancellation and refunds, and almost as many are about support replying with template answers. Auto-renewal is also on by default for the VPN: the first year costs $34.99, the next one $69.99. How to turn it off in advance is described on the page about cancelling your subscription. On Google Play, the company replied to 90 of 94 negative reviews; in the App Store, to none.

What users praise
