Free Canada VPN: The Few Free Plans That Reach a Canadian Server
You can get a Canadian IP address without paying, but the choice is narrow. Out of 67 services on the VPNRadarLab ranking that offer a free plan and list Canada at some tier, only three publish Canada as a free location: one routes it through a browser extension, one confines it to iPhone and iPad, and one hands you manual configs with a shared password. Most other free tiers either stay silent about free locations, pick a server for you, or leave Canada for subscribers. Read more

The three free tiers that name Canada
| Service | Device | Data | Ads | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BelkaVPN | Browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) | not published | not published | Canada only inside the browser |
| VPN cat | iPhone and iPad | not published | Google ads | No Android or desktop app |
| VPNBook | Manual OpenVPN/WireGuard/PPTP setup | unlimited (claim) | not published | One rotated shared password, no kill switch |
The extension suits a laptop user who just needs a Canadian IP for browsing, though only browser traffic leaves through the tunnel: mail clients, games and updates stay on your real connection. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns that split tunnelling like this can negate the security of the VPN (guidance on VPNs). VPN cat works on an iPhone or iPad, with no time limit and no account, but ads run on free servers and there is no way to use it on a PC. VPNBook gives unlimited data and servers in Canada, the US and the UK, yet the connection is manual: one wrong character in the imported config and it fails, and when the tunnel drops, nothing kills your traffic.
Canadian brands that keep Canada off the free plan
A maple leaf on the logo promises nothing. TunnelBear is registered in Canada, but its free tier (2 GB a month) picks the server for you, so the exit cannot be steered north. The service literally named Canada VPN offers free servers in the US, UK, Netherlands, Germany and France; none of its free servers is in Canada. Others are pinned elsewhere: IceVPN (20 GB a month, Japan, Netherlands, US), Shellfire (Germany and US at 1,000 kbit/s), Internxt (France only), FlyVPN (Asia, US, Germany, Ukraine).
Whole-network free tiers and who pays for them
A few apps open every location, Canada included. GLOBEX VPN gives unlimited data on Android with ads. Super Free VPN unlocks all locations, funded by routing business traffic through your spare bandwidth. 1ClickVPN covers 52 countries and turns your device into a proxy of the residential kind for outside parties. On a phone that holds banking apps, that trade deserves a hard look.
The top three by page score
| CitadelVPN | DuneVPN | BelkaVPN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page score | 8.38 | 5.39 | 5.15 |
| Registered | Panama | Saudi Arabia (terms) | Panama |
| Paid from | €1.38/mo | €0.86/mo | €2.36/mo |
| Trial | 5 days, no card | 7 days, no card | 7 days, no payment |
| Free locations | not published | limited | US and Canada (extension) |
Value carries the heaviest weight in the preset, so cheap plan terms lift a service fast. The leader runs an ad-free free plan but never names its free countries. DuneVPN shows Google AdMob ads in its free plan and has shipped only an Android app so far. Only BelkaVPN names Canada at all, and even that is browser-only.
Data caps, ads and what "free" costs
37 of the 67 services do not publish a free data allowance, and among those that do, caps run from 200–300 MB a day to 20 GB a month. About twenty claim unlimited data. Ads are confirmed by 26 providers and denied by just 6; the rest say nothing. Only 7 of the 67 have an independent no-logs audit, and 31 confirm a kill switch, so on hotel Wi-Fi that feature is not guaranteed.
When a trial or a cheap plan beats free
A no-card trial lets you use the paid service for a few days and costs nothing if you cancel in time (list at VPN trials without a credit card). Paid plans here start at €0.86 a month with a median around €3.26. For anyone who needs a guaranteed Canadian exit regularly, the Canada servers ranking is the better starting point than any free tier.
FAQ
Can I choose a Canadian server on a free plan?
Only if the provider lists Canada as free or opens its whole network. Where selection is automatic, the exit is a gamble.
Does a browser extension hide all my traffic?
No. It covers browser tabs only; the rest of the device stays on your real IP.
Will a free Canadian IP work for CBC Gem, Crave or banking?
Treat it as unreliable. VPNRadarLab does not test access, and a free tier on shared addresses gives no guarantee.
Short answer
Three free tiers give a Canadian IP: BelkaVPN (extension only), VPN cat (iPhone/iPad, with ads) and VPNBook (manual configs, shared rotated password). TunnelBear, a company registered in Canada, and the brand called Canada VPN do not open Canada to free users. If Canada matters daily, a trial without a card or a plan under a euro is the cleaner path.
