Why the ratings differ so much
On Google Play, Urban VPN has 4.11 out of 5 from 1628 collected reviews, in the App Store 1.95 from 350, and on Trustpilot 2.63 from 64. The gap largely comes down to who is writing. Android has a free version, and the positive reviews there are short: it works, plenty of countries. On iPhone, the app only works with Premium, so the App Store reviews come from people who ran into the payment screen.
The stores themselves show different figures: 4.61 from 9527 ratings in the App Store and 4.5 in Google Play. Those include star ratings without text, while a written review is more often left by someone who is unhappy.
The two main complaints
The first is about money. In the App Store, the most common complaint is that the app is advertised as free, yet on iPhone it won't let you past the payment screen without a subscription. Next to that are complaints about the trial period: after three days of Premium, the store charges the yearly plan. On Trustpilot there are also refund denials and silence from support. The second complaint is about connections: dropouts, low speeds, and certain countries like Egypt, Algeria or Turkey either failing to connect or disappearing from the list. In Google Play, this is the main reason for one-star and two-star ratings.
