TorGuard not working? Common causes and what to check

4 things to check, built from what TorGuard publishes about its apps, protocols and support. We do not test connections ourselves.

What to check

Switch protocol in the app: TorGuard lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Own protocol, VLESS / Reality, VMess.

If the network blocks VPNs, turn on obfuscation.

Try a manual configuration (custom WireGuard config import, OpenVPN customization).

Contact support: live chat, email.

Obfuscation is not on every plan

The most common trap with TorGuard on networks that block VPNs: the Stealth mode (Shadowsocks and Stunnel) comes only with the Ultimate plan. Standard and Pro do not include it, and in a hotel, an office, or a country with censorship, plain WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 may fail to connect at all. Check your plan in your account dashboard first. TorGuard also offers a separate V2Ray app with VLESS, Reality, VMess, and Trojan. If that does not help either, compare the services in our VPN with obfuscation list.

Protocol, manual config, and router

If the tunnel keeps dropping on a regular network, switch the protocol in the app: WireGuard runs over UDP only, while OpenVPN can also work over TCP. TorGuard lets you import custom WireGuard configs and fine-tune OpenVPN settings, which is a way out if the app will not start. For OpenWrt, there is a separate V2Ray app.

Connected, but something will not load

If the internet cuts out entirely when the VPN drops, the kill switch has likely kicked in: in TorGuard it can be full or per-app. If a site only fails to load with the VPN on, the built-in DNS blocker for ads and trackers may be the cause. Netflix on TorGuard is claimed on Pro or with a streaming IP; on Standard, streaming may not open. A device beyond your plan's limit will not connect: 8 on Standard, 12 on Pro, 16 on Ultimate.

Where to get help

TorGuard does not mention a public server status page, so the only way to find out whether an outage is on their side or in your network is to ask support. Live chat runs around the clock, and email tickets are available, all in English; the service does not promise response times. Services where server status is visible right away are collected in the VPN with a status page list.
