Decentralized VPN Ranking: Node Networks, Token Payments and Exit Risk

A decentralized VPN replaces one company's server fleet with independent operators who run the nodes and get paid for the bandwidth they relay. Of 23 services on the VPNRadarLab list, 15 have enough published data to score, and the leaders are NymVPN (4.98), Anyone Protocol (3.8) and Mysterium Network (3.73). None of the 23 has an independently audited no-logs claim, and none owns its servers, so the real question is whose exit you borrow and what that person can see. This page covers which networks are worth using and what the risks are; the glossary entry on dVPNs explains the mechanics. Read more

How a dVPN differs from a VPN company

A classic VPN rents racks, signs contracts and answers court orders as one legal entity. A dVPN hands traffic to community node operators: 19 of the 23 entries say so, four stay silent on it. Nobody holds a full user list, which removes the single subpoena target but also the single contractually liable party.

Top three side by side

NymVPN Anyone Protocol Mysterium Network
Page score 4.98 3.8 3.73
Jurisdiction Switzerland Cayman Islands Switzerland
From price €3.44/mo free app, paid tier unpriced €2.23/mo
Routing 2-hop WireGuard or 5-hop mixnet 3-hop onion, 7,500+ relays one node by default or Double VPN, 11,000+ servers
Payment card, cash, coins, NYM token ANYONE token (Ethereum) card, PayPal, crypto

NymVPN leads on security: it is the only one that publishes a security audit (Cure53, 2024, after earlier reviews by Oak Security), plus cover traffic in its slow mode. Anyone Protocol takes the highest privacy subscore on the page (5.3 against NymVPN's 5.0), and with privacy weighted at 45% here, that places it second, ahead of Mysterium Network. Mysterium ends up third because its privacy subscore sits at just 2.7, even though it carries a higher overall score (4.02 against Anyone's 3.38) and the best apps score on the page (8.0); it also asks for an email at signup.

Who answers for the exit node

When you exit through someone else's IP

HTTPS encrypts page content, not your destination. On a single-node route the operator sees your IP and which domains you look up, since DNS queries and the TLS handshake still leak hostnames. Multi-hop is what separates the two: the entry point knows your identity, the exit knows the site, and no single person holds both. VALT states plainly that its exit operator sees your IP and routes every connection through one node. Mysterium claims its residential IPs are harder for sites to detect as a VPN, which is why a look at the residential IP VPN ranking makes sense before assuming a home exit is harmless.

When you run the node yourself

Sharing bandwidth flips the liability. Strangers' traffic now leaves from your home line, so abuse complaints and police attention can land on your household. The EFF legal FAQ for Tor relay operators advises against home exits for exactly this reason, and the logic transfers to any dVPN paying you for exits.

Paying with tokens and crypto

Nineteen of 23 services accept cryptocurrency, and most reward node runners in a native coin: NYM, ANYONE, OXT (Orchid), OXEN (Lokinet), MASQ, LTHN, HOPR, IPX and the Sentinel DVPN/P2P tokens. Customers rarely need the coin, because card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay checkouts hide the wallet on the bigger apps. The ranking judges privacy, not market charts, so treat any coin as a payment rail.

What the ranking can judge and what it cannot

The page scores published policies, prices, protocols and apps, weighted at privacy 45%, security 15.7%, bypass of blocking 11.8%, price 11.8%, network size and apps 7.9% each. It cannot inspect the disks of individual operators: a no-logs promise binds the company, not the volunteer at the exit, and all 17 such claims on the list are unaudited.

Decentralized VPN FAQ

Is a dVPN safer than a normal VPN?

Only with multi-hop. A single node means trusting one anonymous person with your metadata.

Are there free dVPNs?

Yes, 11 of 23 list a free plan, but for some of them (open-source clients for the Sentinel network) only the app is free and the bandwidth is paid in tokens.

Is there a decentralized VPN router?

Deeper Network sells a hardware router bought once without a subscription, Mysterium Network has a Wi-Fi router app, and Anyone Protocol has its own router hardware on preorder.

Can you earn by sharing bandwidth?

Node runners get paid in tokens, but the ranking does not judge earnings, and the legal exposure at the exit is yours.

Short answer

NymVPN for a mixnet with a published security audit, Anyone Protocol for a free 3-hop onion route, Mysterium for the cheapest entry (€2.23) and residential exits. Use multi-hop for sensitive traffic, keep your home connection out of the exit pool, and read every no-logs claim as an unaudited promise.
