AirVPN sits in 19th place in the main ranking with a score of 4.37 out of 10. It loses points on privacy (4.5) and censorship bypass (2.9): there is no independent no-logs audit, Italy is part of the 14 Eyes, and obfuscation boils down to OpenVPN tunnels over SSH, SSL and Tor. There is no live chat, and iOS only offers manual WireGuard or OpenVPN setup. Still, it has rare strengths: sign-up without a real email, direct Monero payments, prepaid plans with no auto-renewal, port forwarding and P2P on all servers.
Need audits and apps: Proton VPN, X-VPN, NordVPN, ExpressVPN
All four rank higher, from 6.12 for Proton VPN to 4.77 for ExpressVPN. Each has a published no-logs audit, an iOS app and live chat, and none belongs to a surveillance alliance. The entry price is almost the same: €2.57-3.00 per month versus €2.75 for AirVPN. You pay with anonymity: email is required everywhere (X-VPN accepts a disposable one), auto-renewal is on by default (ExpressVPN keeps it off when you pay with bitcoin). Port forwarding remains available on Proton VPN's paid plans and on NordVPN through a dedicated IP.
Need anonymity: Cryptostorm, NVPN, Incognet VPN
They are the only ones on this page that accept Monero directly, and none of them needs a working email. Cryptostorm comes closest to AirVPN: port forwarding is included in the price, torrents are allowed, obfs4 and Xray are available, and it scores 3.3 for censorship bypass, the highest in the list. Downsides: US jurisdiction, no independent no-logs audit, an overall score of 4.05. NVPN does not publish its jurisdiction, and refunds are only available within 3 days. Incognet VPN covers 5 countries, and port forwarding there is a separate plan from $8 per month.
Is there a cheaper option than AirVPN?
CopVPN costs from €1.28 per month, but its privacy score is 2.3: the US, the 5 Eyes alliance, no anonymous sign-up and no port forwarding.
