A Swedish service in an American group
AzireVPN was founded in Sweden in 2012, and since then, according to the service, all of its servers have been owned by the company itself. In November 2024, the service was bought by Malwarebytes, a company from Santa Clara (California) known for its antivirus software. The team still works in Stockholm, but legally the brand belongs to Malwarebytes Inc.: AzireVPN does not name a separate Swedish firm on its pages. The listing describes it as "Sweden by origin, USA by owner", with Malwarebytes addresses in California and in Cork, Ireland.
Malwarebytes Privacy VPN and the shared network
The group has two VPN brands: AzireVPN itself and Malwarebytes Privacy VPN. After the acquisition, Privacy VPN was moved onto the AzireVPN infrastructure, so the two products run on the same network. They differ in plans and sales: AzireVPN is bought separately, in euros, from €3.75 per month on the annual plan. More about the second brand can be found on the page who owns Malwarebytes Privacy VPN, and both are listed together with ratings in the section Malwarebytes VPN brands.
What the American owner changes
Sweden is part of the 14 Eyes alliance: on our privacy scale that is better than 5 Eyes but worse than a country outside the alliances. The bigger issue is the paperwork. The links to legal documents on the AzireVPN site lead to the Malwarebytes site, and the privacy policy there is written for Malwarebytes Privacy VPN, with no mention of AzireVPN. That policy says the company may disclose data to comply with a lawful request. So the rules for handling data are now set by an American company, even though the brand's history and team are Swedish. Other services from the same country are collected in the Swedish VPNs roundup.
Are AzireVPN and Malwarebytes Privacy VPN the same service?
They share the same network, but they are two separate products with their own plans.
