CyberGhost VPN user reviews: what earns the stars and what costs them

5,614 reviews of CyberGhost VPN collected from Trustpilot, App Store and Google Play. Most come from App Store: 4.33 of 5 after smoothing. Reviews never change our score.

Ratings by source

Smoothed: a source’s average across all VPNs counts as 50 extra reviews, so a few five-star reviews cannot outrank thousands.

On Reddit and forums

37 Reddit and forum threads mention CyberGhost VPN (we keep titles and search snippets only).

App Store users are the happiest with CyberGhost: the iOS app carries the highest smoothed average of the three sources VPNRadarLab tracks (4.33 of 5), Google Play sits level with the all-VPN norm, and Trustpilot at 3.84 runs slightly above the market mark. The split has a logic to it: store ratings reflect the app on the device in front of them, while Trustpilot attracts people with an invoice and a billing question. Our own score of 4.18/10 is built from published facts only, so reviews never move it.

Why Trustpilot and the app stores disagree about CyberGhost

Every platform catches a different moment: stars arrive while the session works on a phone, and Trustpilot hears from people holding a receipt.

Source Sample collected Smoothed average All-VPN average Last 90 days Replies to negatives
Trustpilot 200 3.84 3.66 3.84 from 149 all 46
App Store 3,014 4.33 3.54 4.65 from 627 none recorded
Google Play 2,400 3.89 3.90 4.10 from 569 376 of 603

The headline a platform prints (Trustpilot TrustScore 3.9 from 20,845 reviews, App Store US 4.23 from 39,599 ratings, Google Play 4.3 from 170K) also swallows star-only taps from people who typed nothing, which is why Google Play shows 4.3 while written reviews average 3.89.

What five-star CyberGhost reviews mention

Ease of use leads on every source: roughly 33% of positive Trustpilot reviews, 19% on the App Store, 9% on Google Play name it. Speed comes second, then price. Recent months are friendlier too: from May to September 2026 more than 400 reviews a month appeared, averaging 4.21–4.40.

The main complaints: billing on Trustpilot, connections in the stores

Keyword shares below are approximate counts; a single review can touch several themes.

Theme Trustpilot App Store Google Play
Money: charges, renewals, refunds, cancellations ~65% ~31% ~15%
Connection or app not working ~43% ~48% ~27%
Support ~35% ~10% ~6%
Streaming catalogue still blocked ~17% ~8% ~6%

Two reasons dominate. On Trustpilot, reviewers describe a renewal that arrived earlier or cost more than expected, money taken after cancelling, or a refund that took convincing. In the stores the complaints are blunter: the server list refuses to load, the login spins endlessly, the tunnel dies after an update. Many one-star Android reviews are a few words, mood rather than cause.

Which CyberGhost terms sit behind the complaints

Auto-renewal is on by default, and the 26-month plan ($51.74, advertised as $1.99 a month) renews yearly at the same $51.74, which more than doubles the effective monthly price (x2.17). Several Trustpilot "charged again" stories describe exactly this kind of renewal. Refunds run 45 days on plans of 6 months or longer and 14 days on the monthly plan, but purchases made inside Apple's or Google's stores are refunded by the store rather than by CyberGhost, and that exclusion feeds several disputes. Streaming gripes fit the data as well: CyberGhost lists optimised streaming servers but promises nothing for any specific streaming service. The refund breakdown covers the windows and the store exclusion.

What the forum threads add

The 37 Reddit and forum threads carry no stars. They revolve around setup: MikroTik and GL.iNet routers, Linux Mint, Chromebooks, one Windows 11 crash discussion, plus "is it still worth it" debates and coupon hunting.

Why the 4.18 score ignores all of this

Stars swing with sales cycles and renewal dates, so the VPNRadarLab score (4.18 of 10, 24th of 377) uses published facts alone. The losses concentrate in three places: a bypass sub-score of 0, because CyberGhost lists no obfuscation or stealth protocol; price and terms at 3.58, dragged by the renewal jump; and privacy at 5, where Romania sitting outside 5/9/14 Eyes earns points but the absence of a published independent no-logs audit costs them. The VPNRadarLab review hub covers the smoothing method.

CyberGhost review questions

Is CyberGhost legit according to its reviews?

The patterns point to a working product that bills aggressively, not a scam. Turning auto-renewal off early removes the most common Trustpilot complaint, the unexpected renewal charge.

Why is the Google Play rating higher than the written reviews?

Because the 4.3 headline counts star-only taps, while the comments people actually write average 3.89.

Does CyberGhost answer bad reviews?

Every negative Trustpilot review in the sample got a reply, 376 of 603 negatives on Google Play did, and none are recorded on the App Store.

CyberGhost reviews at a glance

Stores reward the app for working simply; Trustpilot is where billing surprises surface, with money matters in roughly 65% of negative reviews and connection failures leading the store complaints (~48% on iOS). Before paying: buy on the website if the refund window matters, and on the 2 years + 2 months plan expect the $51.74 yearly renewal. The Trustpilot profile shows the freshest billing stories.
