NordVPN wins on points, 5.58 against 5.30 out of 10, yet it takes only two of the six scored areas, privacy and security, while PureVPN takes three (price and fair terms, network, platforms and support) and censorship bypass ends level. NordVPN's total rests on a security lead of almost three points, the widest gap in the table. PureVPN's case is a much smaller renewal bill, a 7-day trial and wider home hardware coverage. Pick Nord if published server-side protection matters most; pick PureVPN if the year-after price decides.

Security: the four items behind NordVPN's widest lead

Both publish a kill switch, DNS leak protection and WireGuard (Nord through its NordLynx build), plus quantum-resistant encryption. NordVPN adds four items PureVPN does not publish: RAM-only servers, Double VPN multi-hop, two-factor sign-in and a HackerOne bug bounty. In a scoring model built on published facts, silence earns nothing, and those four items produce the widest sub-score gap here, 7.1 against 4.3. Neither provider publishes a security audit or open-source apps.

Privacy: one report apart, and what each policy keeps

Both hold an independent no-logs audit (NordVPN verified five times since 2018, PureVPN by KPMG) and both jurisdictions, Panama and the British Virgin Islands, sit outside the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes alliances. The one item separating them is a transparency report: NordVPN publishes one quarterly on government requests and DMCA notices, while PureVPN does not publish a transparency report and has no warrant canary. Policies differ too. Nord wipes last-session details within 15 minutes of disconnect, keeping only a flag that you used the service in the last 90 days. PureVPN records per-user bandwidth totals, the connection date and app analytics (Firebase, Mixpanel, New Relic), and keeps dedicated IP records for 25 days after the subscription ends.

Fewer countries, higher network and device scores for PureVPN

Nord lists 150 countries and 7,115 servers; PureVPN covers 65+ countries with 6,000+ servers and still scores higher on network, because it advertises 20 Gbps ports while NordVPN does not publish 10 Gbps servers (its speed claim is 800+ Mbps). On devices, router support decides the area: PureVPN covers routers, a Fire TV app and consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch through router setup), while Nord offers a Smart TV app and Meshnet but does not publish router support.

The bill for the first 27 months and the year after

Plan First 27 months 12 months at renewal Per month after renewal
NordVPN Basic $94.23 $139.08 about $11.59
NordVPN Complete $121.23 $219.48 about $18.29
NordVPN Prime $202.23 $296.28 about $24.69
PureVPN Standard $58.20 $47.95 about $4.00
PureVPN Plus $73.80 $69.95 about $5.83
PureVPN Max $95.85 $84.95 about $7.08

NordVPN renews at 3.32 times its first-term rate, which costs it the full renewal-jump deduction in the price row; a single renewal year costs more than its whole 27-month deal (Basic: $139.08 against $94.23). PureVPN renews at 1.86 times and asks less for twelve months than it did for twenty-seven. Higher tiers: Complete adds antivirus, a password manager and 1 TB of encrypted storage; Prime adds identity theft insurance up to $1M. PureVPN's Plus adds a password manager, Max a free eSIM with 3 GB for 30 days; static IP starts at $2.49 a month, port forwarding at $1.49. See the NordVPN pricing page for the full ladder.

Trial, refund holes and paying without a card

PureVPN has a 7-day trial that converts to a paid plan unless you cancel, and renewals with a trial origin fall outside refunds. Its 31-day window also excludes CoinPayments crypto and store purchases, as the PureVPN refund page lists. NordVPN gives a full refund within 30 days, and App Store, Google Play and Amazon purchases are refunded through the store itself. For cardless payment, Nord sells prepaid cards bought with cash and accepts several cryptocurrencies; PureVPN takes cards, PayPal and coins through CoinPayments. Both auto-renew by default and both allow 10 devices at once.

Which buyer each one suits

  • Long-term subscriber counting costs: PureVPN, the renewal stays under $8 a month even on Max.
  • Maximum published security: NordVPN, for RAM-only servers, multi-hop, 2FA and the bug bounty.
  • Household wanting the router and consoles covered: PureVPN.
  • Cash buyer or privacy-focused user: NordVPN, via prepaid cards and the quarterly transparency report.
