PureVPN wins the comparison outright: it leads in five of the six scored areas, the censorship-bypass score ends level at 1.9, and Hotspot Shield takes none of them. Still, a PureVPN subscription is not the right answer for everyone. Hotspot Shield holds a few single perks the scoring weighs lightly: a free Basic tier, a 45-day refund with no questions, streaming brands named in its own claims and 80+ countries on the map.
Why Hotspot Shield trails in every area but bypass
Privacy is where most of the 3.94 versus 5.30 gap opens, and two facts cause it. First, jurisdiction: Hotspot Shield is a US company, which puts it inside the Five Eyes and zeroes out that item; PureVPN, registered in the British Virgin Islands, sits outside the 5, 9 and 14 Eyes, as the alliance glossary explains. Second, the 2017 complaint by the Center for Democracy and Technology to the FTC alleging user data collection stays on Hotspot Shield's record as a public security incident and a red flag. Everything else lines up: both claim a no-logs policy, both passed an independent review (Aon checked Hotspot Shield's privacy policy in August 2023 and found no plaintext IP logging; KPMG audited PureVPN), and neither stores the connection IP.
Security splits on a single line: PureVPN runs post-quantum encryption on its quantum-resistant servers, while Hotspot Shield does not publish any such protection. Hydra, the proprietary protocol Hotspot Shield markets as its fastest, fills the same scoring slot as WireGuard and therefore earns nothing extra.
The network and platform leads are real but narrow. PureVPN publishes 6,000+ servers against 1,800+, 20 Gbps ports against Hotspot Shield's 1 Gbps ceiling, a dedicated IP from $2.49 a month and port forwarding from $1.49. Router support is the only item separating the two platform scores: PureVPN has it, Hotspot Shield does not mention it anywhere.
Where Hotspot Shield is the stronger pick
Nobody free-rides on PureVPN: there is no free plan. Hotspot Shield Basic gives 500 MB a day, up to 2 Mbps, one device and one virtual US location (the virtual locations glossary covers what that means), with ads on mobile. If your VPN habits fit inside that, you never pay anyone. Hotspot Shield also names Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video in its claims and lists 80+ countries against 65+, while PureVPN publishes no streaming names at all. Premium bundles Aura Antivirus for Windows and Mac, 1Password and a spam call blocker, and Premium Family stretches to 25 devices for up to 5 members.
First-term price against the renewal bill
| Plan | Paid up front | Per month | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotspot Shield Premium, yearly | $29 | $2.42 | $95.99 a year |
| PureVPN Standard, 16 months | $40.80 | $2.55 | $57.95 a year |
| PureVPN Standard, 27 months | $58.20 | $2.15 | $47.95 a year |
The first year at Hotspot Shield looks like a bargain, then the renewal bill arrives at $95.99, roughly double what PureVPN charges for the same twelve months. That x3.31 jump (against x1.86) does most of the damage, and the missing trial and crypto option cost Hotspot Shield the rest, so the free tier is not enough to win the price area. In euro terms the cheapest monthly entry is €2.08 at Hotspot Shield against €1.85 at PureVPN.
Refund exclusions, the trial and paying with crypto
In real terms Hotspot Shield's refund window is two weeks longer than PureVPN's 31 days; the scoring simply stops rewarding days beyond 30. Direct purchases are refunded with no questions asked at Hotspot Shield, while PureVPN's window has holes, as the PureVPN refund page lists: CoinPayments crypto, App Store and Google Play purchases and renewals are all non-refundable, and the 7-day trial converts to a paid plan unless you cancel it. Auto-renewal is on by default at both; switch it off in your account.
Owners and what each privacy policy admits to keeping
Hotspot Shield belongs to Pango / Aura via Anchorfree, LLC in the USA. PureVPN is operated by GZ Systems Limited (Puresquare) in Road Town, Tortola. PureVPN publishes its data list openly: signup email, connection dates for support, bandwidth totals, device info, analytics and crash reports, plus dedicated IP records kept 25 days after the subscription ends. Hotspot Shield only states it does not log data that could be tied to users and says nothing about session times, a warrant canary or a transparency report.
Hotspot Shield and PureVPN FAQ
Is either one faster?
VPNRadarLab does not test speed, streaming or unblocking; it scores published facts. Any speed claims come from the vendors themselves.
Which one works better on an iPhone?
User ratings, not the score, lean toward Hotspot Shield: 4.58 on the US App Store from 362,514 ratings versus PureVPN's 4.36. Note its iOS split tunnelling works by site only.
Can I pay without a bank card?
PayPal works at both. PureVPN also accepts Bitcoin and other coins via CoinPayments, but crypto payments cannot be refunded.
Which buyer each service suits
- Never planning to pay: Hotspot Shield Basic, free forever within its limits.
- A long cheap subscription with post-quantum security and strong privacy on paper: PureVPN, and pay by card or PayPal so the refund stays valid.
- A household of heavy users: Hotspot Shield Premium Family with 25 devices.
PureVPN is the better purchase on almost every count, and its renewal terms seal it. Hotspot Shield makes sense for the free tier, for a single paid year backed by the 45-day refund, or for a big household on Premium Family.
