All the reviews we collected concern third-party apps. 275 reviews on Google Play belong to the app "VPN Gate - Software Ethernet" by the developer MASTERVNC, and the single App Store review was written about "VPN Gate List" by a different author. Neither the university nor SoftEther releases these apps: they connect to the same volunteer-run servers, but their ads and restrictions are their own.
Ratings split sharply
Google Play has 153 five-star ratings and 80 one-star ratings, while ratings from two to four account for just 42 reviews. The positive reviews are short ("good", "nice", "best and free"), and what they praise most is that the service is free and connects quickly. On its Google Play page the app shows 3.7 and over 500 thousand installs. The US App Store shows 2.33 from only 6 ratings, which is too few to draw conclusions from.
What people complain about
We sorted 94 negative reviews by keywords in English, Arabic and Persian, so the shares are approximate. About 40% concern connection: the app won't connect, the session drops after a few minutes, or the client crashes on launch. Roughly 17% complain about ads: you have to watch them before connecting or every 15 minutes, and according to two reviewers, the paid ad-free code didn't work. About 10% say things got worse after an update, and around 9% are unhappy with ping in games, most often in BGMI. The developer replied to 14 of these 94 reviews.
