The company behind the app

Bright VPN is made by Bright Data Ltd., the same company that sells businesses the Bright Data proxy network and services for collecting publicly available data from the internet. According to our data, it has no other consumer brands. The Bright VPN documents do not name the country of incorporation, so we list the jurisdiction on the card as "not stated". Open sources place Bright Data's headquarters in Tel Aviv, and the company's CEO is Or Lenchner.

Where Bright Data came from

The company started in 2014 as Luminati Networks, a division of Hola, the maker of a free VPN built on the same scheme: the devices of free users served as exit points for Luminati's paying customers. In 2017, Luminati was separated from Hola, and the London investment fund EMK Capital bought a controlling stake at a valuation of about $200 million. In March 2021, Luminati was renamed Bright Data. Since then, the company has been sued by Meta and X over data collection from their platforms, and it won both cases.

What this means for the user

For the owner of Bright VPN, the app serves as a source of IP addresses for its proxy network: while your device is idle, requests from corporate clients pass through it. There is no paid version, and your bandwidth is the payment itself. The company is large, and its history and court cases are easy to verify through open sources, but its main product is precisely selling this kind of access. What this means for logs and risks is covered on the Bright VPN safety page. You can compare other owners in the VPN owners section.
