Hysteria2 vs VLESS Reality: UDP Speed or TCP Stealth

How many services offer each protocol, from the providers’ own pages. 18 consumer VPNs offer both.

Hysteria2 suits a poor connection that still passes UDP; VLESS plus Reality suits a strict network that blocks anything unusual. One runs QUIC over UDP, usually port 443, and shrugs off loss; the other runs TLS 1.3 over TCP 443 behind the handshake of a genuine site. Carry both profiles in a single app and swap as conditions demand.

Hysteria2 vs VLESS Reality side by side

Hysteria2 VLESS + Reality
Transport QUIC over UDP; any UDP port, often 443 TLS 1.3 over TCP 443
A prober sees an ordinary HTTP/3 site the real borrowed site
Client holds server, port, password, pin or insecure flag x25519 public key, short ID, UUID, SNI, uTLS fingerprint
Server needs TLS certificate, open UDP port no own domain or certificate
Breaks when UDP or QUIC dropped or throttled TCP buckling under loss

Why Hysteria2 wins on lossy links and Reality on strict networks

TCP treats a lost packet as congestion and backs off. Across long routes or unstable Wi-Fi, that retreat alone makes a fast line crawl. Hysteria2 applies its own congestion logic above QUIC and keeps pushing through loss.

Reality covers another threat. A censor checking the SNI finds a famous domain, while a probe without credentials gets passed to that real site, so the disguise survives inspection. Enable xtls-rprx-vision at each end and the nested-TLS signature DPI hunts for disappears; with the flow off on one side, nothing connects.

What gets each protocol blocked

A firewall discarding UDP or QUIC destroys Hysteria2. Company and campus networks often shut UDP entirely, and some regimes throttle QUIC on sensitive dates. Salamander scrambles packets with a pre-shared key, defeating QUIC fingerprinting, though the flow stops looking like HTTP/3. Port hopping across a UDP range helps when one busy port is shaped.

Reality fails elsewhere. The disguise weakens if the borrowed site redirects, or if it lacks TLS 1.3, or if its IP sits far from your server; any one of these is enough. Bare VLESS with security set to none offers no camouflage, which DPI spots easily. Once the server IP lands on a blocklist, neither protocol helps.

Which protocol for which network

  • Hotel Wi-Fi or packed mobile data: begin with Hysteria2, hold Reality in reserve.
  • Corporate or campus firewall: Reality leads, since UDP tends to be shut there.
  • Aggressive DPI with active probing: Reality as primary, Hysteria2 whenever UDP flows.
  • Clean residential line: either works.

How many services offer Hysteria2, VLESS or both

The figures reflect published provider data; the site runs no speed or blocking tests.

In the data Hysteria2 VLESS / Reality
Consumer services offering it 23 36
With an independent no-logs audit 1 1 (the same service)
Also listing obfuscation 23 of 23 36 of 36
Median cheapest price a month €3.19 €2.79

VLESS reaches wider: 18 services ship it without Hysteria2, against 5 the other way. Both appear in 18 line-ups; 8 of those publish prices from €0.71 to €4.99, median €3.19.

Ranked services that carry both protocols

Service Overall score Jurisdiction From, a month
CitadelVPN 8.74 Panama €1.38
StelsVPN 3.81 Cyprus €3.99
Nyx VPN 3.57 Seychelles €0.71
BTGuard 3.41 Canada €3.58
VPNBaron 3.29 not stated €4.99
ChibaTunnel 3.12 not stated not published
Teleport VPN (DIGITAL HERO) 2.91 not stated €3.59
Stash 2.62 not stated €1.15

BTGuard, for one, runs Reality on TCP 443 beside Hysteria2 on UDP 8443. Ten of the 18 stay out of the main ranking for publishing too little, and many of them, such as Hiddify, v2rayNG, V2Box or Shadowrocket, are bare clients without servers, so the key has to come from elsewhere. On a VPS, 3X-UI or Hiddify Manager hosts both; open the UDP port in the firewall.

Hysteria2 vs VLESS FAQ

Is Hysteria2 faster than VLESS?

On lossy or long-distance links, generally yes; a clean residential line erases the edge.

Can one server run both?

Yes. TCP and UDP use distinct sockets, so one VPS listens on each.

Does Hysteria2 need a domain?

A certificate: real for a domain, or self-signed with the client's insecure or pinned option.

Is VLESS without Reality enough?

Not against modern DPI; add Reality, or TLS as a bare minimum.

Verdict

Hysteria2 fits weak links where UDP survives; VLESS with Reality fits tightly filtered networks, and the site counts 36 consumer services for it against 23. The Hysteria 2 protocol spec and the REALITY repository document both, while the stealth VPN ranking compares providers. Pick a subscription or panel carrying both profiles, then swap when one slows.
