What Is ZTNA? How Zero Trust Network Access Works and Its Limits

Of 543 consumer VPNs in our data, 9 say they do not offer it. Below: the services that rank highest for it.

ZTNA stands for zero trust network access, a remote access model where the connection itself grants nothing. Every attempt to open an internal app gets authorised separately: who the user is, what state their device is in, what policy permits. The rest stays closed by default. It replaces the perimeter habit where one login at the edge buys broad trust inside; here each request is judged on its own and re-checked while the session runs.

How a ZTNA request flows

  1. A user opens an internal app through an agent on the laptop or in a browser.
  2. The request arrives at a broker (the controller), not at the app server.
  3. The broker confirms identity with the identity provider: SSO over SAML or OIDC, plus an MFA prompt.
  4. Device posture counts too: patch level, disk encryption.
  5. When policy allows, a connector placed beside the app opens a session to that one application. The connector dials outbound to the broker, so the app needs no inbound port on the internet and stays invisible to anyone the policy doesn't name.
  6. Checks continue during the session. Disable the account in the IdP and SCIM syncs the change to the ZTNA tool, closing the path.

NIST's SP 800-207 guide to zero trust architecture (August 2020) names the same parts: a policy engine that makes the call, an administrator that sets up or tears down sessions, plus an enforcement point sitting in the traffic path.

ZTNA vs VPN

Question Corporate VPN ZTNA
Scope of one login A whole network segment A single named application
When trust is granted Once, at connection Per request, re-verified
Facing the internet The VPN gateway Usually just the vendor's broker
Device checks Rare Built into policy
Stolen password leads to Roaming across the segment Only the apps that account was granted

Tunnels confuse people here. Plenty of ZTNA agents still build one, often WireGuard (25 of the 98 tools in our ranking list it). The difference sits in reach: a classic VPN grants a whole subnet, ZTNA opens a door to a single app.

Agent or browser

An installed agent reads device posture and carries non-web protocols such as SSH and RDP, which fits managed laptops. Browser-based (clientless) access needs no install, the natural fit for contractors and personally owned phones, yet mostly limited to web apps. A company with both managed staff laptops and outside contractors usually ends up running the two modes side by side.

Where ZTNA falls short

Approval of a session is where oversight ends for many products: they no longer watch what the user does within the application. A hijacked IdP account sails through policy like any legitimate one. Legacy thick-client apps, server-initiated traffic and UDP-heavy flows need extra connector work near the app. A cloud broker inserts a hop and makes you dependent on one vendor's uptime. Rollout waits on an application inventory and written policies per group.

ZTNA, SASE and SDP

Software-defined perimeter is the older concept ZTNA grew out of: resources stay concealed until the user has proven identity. ZTNA layered identity providers and posture checks onto that idea. SASE and its security-only cousin SSE package ZTNA alongside a secure web gateway, CASB and firewall as a service, and SASE adds SD-WAN for branch networking. Take the SASE route and ZTNA arrives as one module of the stack.

Does a home user need ZTNA?

No. ZTNA guards company applications; it will not hide your IP from websites, route browsing through another country or get you into a foreign streaming library. Among 543 consumer VPNs in our data, a single product claims ZTNA, nine admit they lack it, 533 never bring it up. Our ZTNA solutions ranking compares 98 tools, led by OpenVPN (Access Server / CloudConnexa) on 2.46, Defguard 1.83 and Netmaker 1.70 from a possible 10. Shortlist with care: SSO/SAML is confirmed for 40 of the 98, a free plan exists at 39, and 63 publish no price, asking for a sales quote.

FAQ

Can ZTNA replace a VPN completely?

Mostly, yes, for reaching internal apps. Linking two offices into a single network is still site-to-site work, covered by our business VPN ranking.

Is ZTNA free?

OpenVPN Access Server is free for up to 2 connections and CloudConnexa for up to 5 seats. Defguard's open-source edition and Netmaker's Community edition self-host at no cost.

Does ZTNA hide my IP address?

It doesn't. Its job is app-level access control, not browsing privacy.

Short answer

ZTNA trades network-wide trust for per-application verdicts from a broker that weighs identity, MFA and device state, letting apps surface only via outbound connectors. A stolen login does far less damage, though in-app behaviour, compromised SSO accounts and outdated thick clients remain other controls' problem. Companies with remote staff benefit most; home users need a consumer VPN.
